What will 2015 bring?

Cyber security is going to become even more critical as this new year starts. Information is being shown to be the new currency of this digital world in even stronger terms.  It is very valuable for a whole range of reasons and its loss or damage can critically affect an organisation.

The attacks on organisations around the world – some very publicly acknowledged, others not so – will continue and recent developments suggest the attackers are getting (a) better, (b) braver, (c) more determined, (d) better paid!

The result of this is that cyber defences have to be thought about differently.  No longer will the standard firewalls, signatures and alarm type systems be good enough.  They are still required of course but they need to be much more nimble.

Dynamic tools are required.  Monitoring audit files and reports must be done automatically or at least very frequently by someone who understands what the information means.  Sharing attack information with others, including competitors, is essential.  The seemingly secure mirroring of databases is great but what happens if someone gets into one side of the database and wipes stuff?  Will the mirrored side be wiped too?  How would you back it up so that won’t cause a problem notably on systems with large numbers of transactions taking place?

Food for thought.  Information security (the technical aspects of looking after information) is important but Information Assurance, assurance that the information is maintained under the usual CIA rules and deals with non-repudiation is becoming the name of the game!

  • I have to thank you for the efforts you’ve put in penning this
site. I’m hoping to check out the same high-grade blog posts
from you in the future as well. In fact,
your creative writing abilities has inspired me
to get my own, personal site now 😉

  • I’ve been surfing online more than three hours today, yet I never
found any interesting article like yours.
It is pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all web owners and
bloggers made good content as you did, the internet will be much more useful than ever before.
